How we work
Three parts of how we handle staining, and why each one matters.
01
We clean the wood first, then allow proper drying time before any stain goes on. Wood can hold moisture well after the surface looks dry, and stain needs to penetrate rather than sit on top.
02
Stain color can vary depending on the species, age and condition of the wood. We’ll help you review your color options and understand that the final appearance may vary from samples once the stain is applied to your specific wood.
03
Applied along the grain and back-brushed to help the stain absorb evenly into the wood.
About the service
Staining in Kansas City is different from painting. Stain soaks into wood rather than sitting on top of it, so the condition of the wood shapes the result. Clean, dry, well-prepared wood takes stain evenly and shows off its natural grain.
Preparation is most of the work. We clean the surface and prepare any existing finish as needed. For new wood, preparation starts with sanding the surface to help the stain absorb more evenly. Proper drying time is also an important part of the process. Even when wood feels dry on the surface, it may still hold moisture that can affect how the stain penetrates and performs. Once the wood is properly prepared and ready for stain, we apply it along the grain and back-brush as needed for an even, consistent finish.
Because stain can look different depending on the species, age and condition of the wood, we’ll help you review color options ahead of time and discuss what to expect from the finished result.
how it works
Getting started is simple. Our three-step process is built so you know what is happening, who is responsible and what comes next, and if the plan changes, you hear it from us.
01
One of our team members will come to your property, take a careful look at the space, and ask the right questions to understand exactly what you need. There’s no pressure and no obligation, just a helpful conversation to get things started on the right foot.
02
We put together a clear written quote that covers labor, materials and timeline, and we go over it with you so you know what you are getting and what it costs.
03
Our crew gets to work, keeps your space clean and keeps the project moving. You will hear from us as the work progresses, and if something changes, we will let you know. At the end, we’ll review the finished work with you and discuss any final adjustments needed.
The Values That Guide Our Team
Choosing a painter is about more than a fresh coat. It’s about trusting the people in your home or business.
As local painting contractors across the Kansas City area, we lead with four values that shape every project we take on.
G
We keep learning and improving, from the products we choose to our prep methods and application techniques, so our finishes are made to hold up well beyond day one.
R
We treat your property with care, protecting floors, furniture, landscaping and work areas throughout the project. Keeping the jobsite clean is simply part of how we work.
I
If we identify additional work during the project, we’ll explain the options and discuss any cost changes with you before proceeding. The decision always stays with you.
T
From our office to your jobsite, we work as one team. Clear communication and shared responsibility keep your project moving smoothly and you informed every step of the way.

Nova Painting did an incredible job! Nova’s expert painting on our kitchen island was so good I just kept adding additional projects. They painted our kitchen island, cabinet doors & drawers, freshened the inside of the cabinets and painted the shoe base after the wood floors were redone. They did a great job. Nova Painting was extremely professional, clean, courteous and always on time. Would highly recommend Nova Painting services.Posted on Google![]()

High end stained grade red oak trim everywhere! I am a custom build, general contractor and we self proform all our framing and trim carpentry. This project is an 1860s remodel with fairly elaborate stain grade finishs. The amount of attention to detail and time I personally put into this trim package, I was nervous to say the least on who my painter was going to be! BUT NOVA... came in and owned this job! They nailed it!! Absolutely beautiful finishes!! If something wasn't right, they fixed it! Mark and his lead guys were eager to work with schedules and processes to help make the job flow smooth, and it did. They did an absolutely beautiful job on this trim out along with finishing the wall and ceiling paints. This job is a staple in my carpentry and contracting career and I am happy to have Nova be apart of it. Thank you to Mark, Trisha and "the other Mark" and the team to bring this beautiful art work to the finish line! I am proud of this one! **Pictures don't do it justice and I hope Nova gets better ones posted**Posted on Google![]()

Nova Painting did a great job for us! Caleb and his crew were very conscientious and professional and easy to work with, and Trisha kept us informed of timing and scheduling. We were very pleased with the outcome of having our home painted by them…in addition to having them do some wood repairs due to woodpecker damage. We will gladly recommend Nova Painting any time!
What it costs
Every staining project is different. The type and condition of the wood, the preparation needed, the size of the area (including railings and balusters) and the stain you choose, whether transparent, semi-transparent or solid, can all affect the cost.
If you’re considering staining a deck, fence or other wood surface, we’re happy to look at other areas around your property while we’re there. This may include additional wood surfaces that need staining or exterior areas that could use a refresh.
For interior projects, we can also discuss painted and stained surfaces together so the finishes throughout the space work well with one another.
During your estimate, let us know everything you’re considering. We’ll help you determine what makes sense to include in the project and what may be better planned for another time.
Decks, fences, pergolas, exterior doors and interior wood including trim, beams, mantels and built-ins.
The largest factor is the condition of the existing finish, followed by the size of the area including rails and balusters, the species of wood, any board replacement, and the type of stain.
It depends on the condition of the current finish. If it is in good shape, we can often refresh it. If it is worn, removing it first gives the new stain the best foundation. We will let you know which applies during your estimate.
Wood holds moisture longer than it appears to, and giving it time to dry lets the stain soak in evenly. Allowing the drying time is part of getting a result that lasts.
